Nordland is a continual meeting of sea and land. You will be inspired by the blue-black mountains, decorated in many places with patches of snow, even in summer. Contrasting beautifully with green hillsides, the mountains rise above the crystal clear, azure ocean and create a dramatic setting for the vital fishing hamlets. Here you can stroll on long, white sandy beaches, just like in much more southerly locations.
Wherever you come from, when you are in Nordland there will be little rest for your camera. Hidden round every corner there are new objects for you to capture.

Island hoppingThe coast and islands have been inhabited for centuries, as they still are. Visit the beautiful, verdant Helgeland coast – where you will find more islands than anywhere else in the country. Use a bicycle and hop from island to island.
Get to know the Vega Islands, which received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004.
Lofoten has often been called the world’s most beautiful archipelago. Now it is your turn to experience the wonderful feeling of waking in a rorbu (a fishermen's shack) with the waves lapping below your bed.
Nature wondersA journey through Nordland is a journey through the wonders of nature. Cross the Arctic Circle and enjoy the midnight sun and the light summer nights.
Here you will find Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest tidal current: Exciting, dangerous and with fantastic fishing. Join a glacier walk on Svartisen - the biggest glacier on the North Calotte, right out by the coast.
Off Vesterålen, young male whales are frolicking and filling their stomachs with squid. Join a whale safari and get up close to these leviathans, which are so elegant in the water.
Culture and historyNordland's culture is rich and reaches far back in time. At Borg in Lofoten you can enter a reconstruction of the largest house we know of from Viking times, or perhaps you would rather heave on the oars in a copy of the Gokstad Viking ship.
Go even further back in time at Saltstraumen, where you can prepare your own catch in a cooking hollow, just as they did in the Stone Age.
Visit one of the old trading posts and be fascinated by the way in which the fisheries and the dried fish trade filled them with life and international impulses – like the handmade wallpaper at Kjerringøy, for example, which was brought in from France as a silver wedding present.
Today the modern and the traditional live side by side. You can enjoy modern life in the many towns along the coast, join the many international and local festivals in summer or buy some wonderful craftwork.
Take in Artscape Nordland along the way – a collection of 33 artworks created by national and international contemporary artists and placed in the beautiful landscape.
